More details to this question:
i booked and cancelled a hostel 30 days prior to arrival date. they still charged me 50% due to their policy and i was aware of this policy prior to booking. is it alright to still dispute this 50% cancellation fee?

Sure.  If they do not challenge yours, the money will be given back.
